OK, I know. I haven’t been blogging.

I have just 5 minutes before I have to be in a meeting. Give me 3 minutes to read this and see if it’s of any benefit to you.

What’s your experience with time management? When I got out of seminary I had a little pocket calendar from Concordia Publishing House. Within a year I found that wasn’t going to keep all the info I needed, plus it was small enough to lose easily. So I switched to the desk diary that AAL used to send out. (Now Thrivent does it.) And that worked… sort of. But when I moved to Michigan and a larger congregation I took the short course in the Franklin Planner. I read the Steven Covey books. I tried various sizes and styles of planners. I attended workshops for pastors. I read more books. I got different kinds of software. I was given books by others.

None of it works.

I’m wondering. Is this your experience? Are you overwhelmed by all the details? All the tasks? All the stuff you SHOULD be doing that lurks in the back of your brain and robs you of the joy of the things you actually manage to do?

I’m starting to wonder if this is true… what if God doesn’t care all that much about whether you get all your tasks done. What if being efficient and accomplished and maximizing your time is not the measure of your value in God’s kingdom? If a little child is first in the kingdom (and we know that kids mostly play all day) what does that mean for my plans and goals at work?

Maybe… just maybe… can I find a way for my service to the Lord to be more like play?

These are random thoughts – prompted by the pressure to blog. (“Pastor, I went to the blog and you haven’t written in a while! What’s up?”) I’ve been trying to be responsible. Maybe, instead, we can also serve with things we enjoy… like writing random thoughts.

Just a thought.
