Serving in Our Neighborhood

How many needs are there in the Ann Arbor area? Not just how many needy people, by in how many ways can we meet the needs of others? The answer to that question is probably endless. St. Paul helps in several ways. We support homeless families through our service at Alpha House. Members volunteer to spend time playing with the children, serving meals, or staying overnight as a back-up for the regular staff person there. You can contact Alpha House directly, or watch for the sign-up sheet in our weekly newsletter when we’re preparing for a week of service.

Members of St. Paul believe that abortion takes the life of an unborn child. But our response is not to condemn, but to meet the needs of those who are struggling with a difficult or unplanned pregnancy. Through the Pregnancy Counseling Center our members can volunteer to help, or they can provide material assistance needed to young moms.

Through the Paper Peace Corps we collect materials to be shared with prisoners. The Christmas Caring Tree and the Operation Shoebox provide welcome gifts to needy families in Washtenaw County and in 3rd world countries. And numerous other opportunities arise for members of St. Paul to share the blessings that God has given to them.

ABLAZE in Service
Remember June?, flowers are blooming, spring has sprung, and oil changes have begun… what?! Yep, oil, changes, car washes, and free food, music, and fun were the order of the day at St. Paul Lutheran School. It was our joy to serve our community again by offering all of these services free of charge as part of the Michigan distric Ablaze! campaign. This outreach effort is designed to spur one another on to acts of love which give opportunities to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

At least 20 oil changes were provided for single moms, and other people for whom an oil change was far down on the list of necessities. We were privileged to hand out water and food and wash cars for whoever would come. To make the event even more fun St. Paul members and guests alike were invited to bring their favorite autos, we had Escort XPs to a 40ft, 1000 horse twin V8 motor boat. It only went 85mph… on the water! Gary's goal is 90mph.

These events remind me that the people of God can do a number of things together, sometimes even at the same time. Care for our community, laugh and play together, and indulge ourselves in some things we like to do. When this is done for the sake of God's people, in Christ's name, and with a heart for those not yet connected to our Savior, it can be a very blessed day.

A surprise that day: my wife caught my finger Dr., Dr. Hanken at the Concordia stoplight and gave him free water. He returned the favor by coming up the hill to the school and giving me a free hand examination. I passed and the finger is rapidly improving. Thanks doc!

In Christ,
Pastor Wentzel
