St. Paul: On The Same Page
What is this blog about? - Friday, June 01, 2007

Each week I'll be writing some thoughts about the upcoming Sunday lessons, two Sundays ahead. My hope is that this will help laity be better prepared for worship, that it will help me to be better prepared for preaching, and that it might possibly be a service to some of my fellow pastors as well. NOTE: this is not a heavy exegetical blog. I won't be digging into the Hebrew or Greek. That is step-one of the sermon preparation. This is step-two, some cogitating about the devotional application of the text. How can we apply it to our lives. I hope it's helpful.

You can find a schedule of all the Sunday readings here.

You can read the SPOTS Devotion from St. Paul here in pdf format.

Galatians 3:23-4:7 - by Don Neuendorf

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus..."

People really seem to focus a lot on identity these days. Did our ancestors spend so much time asking the question, "Who am I?...

It seems to me that they spent more time asking questions like: What does God want me to do? What are the inherent rights of people? or Who should I follow? (not to mention, where am I going to find food for tomorrow)

But we're a very narcissistic society. We spend a lot of time in front of the mirror, making sure that we look good, that we fit in with others, that we're up-to-date, that our clothes or car or house says the right thing about us. We often bring that attitude to the Bible when we try to understand passages like this one in Galatians. Some people seem to interpret these verses as their excuse to say, "I'M JUST AS GOOD AS YOU."

I think they're missing the point. It's not about you. It's not about you being better or worse or greater or less. It's about him. It's about being in Jesus.

When we're in Jesus, those other things about us don't stop being true. We don't stop being Jews or Greeks or male or female. But they stop mattering. Our personal identity, our achievements, our rights, those things aren't an issue. All that matters is that we are "sons" - we are heirs who will inherit the gift, the inheritance that is greater than any other possible inheritance, eternal life.
