Matthew 6:24-34 - by Don Neuendorf
"No one can serve two masters."
Of course not. But surely a person could serve one master... and then just have a little part-time thing on the side, right? I could love Jesus with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength - but I could maybe carve out an hour or two a week for a favorite TV show that Jesus might not like. Or I could just reserve a day here and there on special occasions to indulge in too much drink?...
Sounds dumb when you put it that way, but in real life we're actually much worse than that. Jesus connects the not-serving-two-masters idea with our problem of worrying. Notice the "therefore" connector?
So when we worry and fret about money and food and clothes we are doing so because we're forgetting who our master is.
When I worked for my father at Modern Die Systems there were certain things I never worried about. I might worry about pleasing him - but I didn't worry about pleasing the other guys in the shop. I might worry about being on time because I didn't want to disappoint my dad, but I never ever worried about having enough gas for the truck. After all, I carried the company credit card when I drove the company truck on deliveries. And if something went wrong, I knew that one phone call to my dad would set it right.
Who do you work for? Who do you serve? Can your boss handle the things you worry about - or have you been moonlighting?
