St. Paul: On The Same Page
What is this blog about? - Friday, June 01, 2007

Each week I'll be writing some thoughts about the upcoming Sunday lessons, two Sundays ahead. My hope is that this will help laity be better prepared for worship, that it will help me to be better prepared for preaching, and that it might possibly be a service to some of my fellow pastors as well. NOTE: this is not a heavy exegetical blog. I won't be digging into the Hebrew or Greek. That is step-one of the sermon preparation. This is step-two, some cogitating about the devotional application of the text. How can we apply it to our lives. I hope it's helpful.

You can find a schedule of all the Sunday readings here.

You can read the SPOTS Devotion from St. Paul here in pdf format.

Maundy Thursday - by Don Neuendorf

We've already spent 6 weeks talking about each piece of the meal (in our Wednesday evening services). What about earlier?

Jesus awoke on Thursday morning. He knew he would not sleep again until his death on Friday afternoon. Arising and eating with his disciples, he gave them assignments for the day. Prepare for the Seder meal in the evening...

...Jesus had, evidently, already arranged for a room for the meal. But the arrangements were secret, in order to prevent the Jews from cutting short Jesus' plans with his disciples. To find the location, Peter and John were to follow a man carrying a water jar. Then, knowing the location, they could obtain all the necessary ingredients in the marketplace.

Someone, we don't know if it was Peter and John or other disciples, sacrificed the lamb. It was taken to the Temple and, amid the blowing of trumpets and the singing of the Great Hallel, it was killed and its blood caught by the priest. The blood was thrown on the flaming altar. The tallow, kidneys, liver, and tail were burned as sacrifices to the Lord. And then, wrapped in its skin, it was taken to the house to be roasted for the meal.

The day was spent in preparation, for the disciples. But what did Jesus do? Once again, like Wednesday, I suspect he spent much of the time in prayer. Finally, late in the afternoon, Jesus entered the city again. This time there was no fanfare. There were no cheering crowds. Jesus entered the city quietly and made his way to the upper room. His goal now as to prepare his disciples for what would come next.
